Other than having a good diet, nutrition, and a proper workout, NEAT plays an extensive role in your Weight Loss & Fat Loss journey!

What is NEAT?

NEAT stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, describes the calories burned by the physical movements we make in our day-to-day life.

Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis includes the physical movements that are not planned exercises or sports (or sleeping, breathing, and eating).

Some of the examples for NEAT include activities we do on an every day basis like walking, cooking, cleaning, shopping, fidgeting, and even playing a musical instrument!

NEAT is one of the ways our body manages our weight.

How Many Calories Can We Burn Every Day With NEAT?

Well to be honest there is not an exact number, BUT, you can somehow burn around 500–2500 calories every day depending on your work or day.

Also, the amount of calories you burn with NEAT varies from person to person because everyone's metabolism in the body is different. Other than metabolism, genetics, environment, your job, and your lifestyle also plays an important role!

So, What is the Magic [Importance of NEAT]?

Technically NEAT is nothing magic, what makes it magical is how we are going to add it up in our lives, adding small movements can bring up a big visible difference in our fat loss!

It reduces the risk of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular events, and death from all causes.

While weight training and exercises play an important role in your fat loss, NEAT can help you in the long-term weight loss journey.

It improves the digestion of food and also improves immunity.

NEAT plays vital role in the Calories In — Calories Out game [For better Fat loss, “calories in” need to remain fewer than your “calories out” and you should be in a calorie deficit for the results.]

Isn’t it magical that anything you do (involving a movement) is so beneficial for you?

How to Increase NEAT for Weight/Fat Loss? [NEAT Exercise Examples]

If you have a sedentary job, your NEAT energy expenditure will be less than 10% a day which is very less, and you need to increase it to nearly 40–50% to get the best benefits for you and your weight loss!

Here are some of the NEAT Exercise Examples for you-

  • Walk while you talk on the phone.
  • Take the stairs rather than an escalator or elevator.
  • Fidget a bit (safely of course).
  • Take breaks from sitting at home, and walk around the yard.
  • Build or craft something.
  • After every meal, walk for 15–30 minutes.

Doing anything that involves any sort of movement counts as a NEAT exercise.

Every activity we do requires energy (calories), so, doing these small activities will burn a lot of calories, and after some months you will see noticeable results ;)
